Why I'm not over 9/11, and that's ok.

Because in so many ways it's still shocking. The most important part of history is that when we reflect back on it, always consider the time before it. On September 10th all of the aspects of September 11th were completely unthinkable. Especially how the attacks occured on such an enmourous and public.

We didn't imagine of a stituation involving hijacked passenger aircraft turned against our citizens and landmarks. We just didn't. It didn't enter our thoughts. Period.

A decade has passed, We're getting further away from the event. 2012 is getting even more removed from 2001 by mobile techolony alone. Details and memories of the day fade. This is all natural in the process of human heeling, grief and copping.

However, In a similar fashion that I want my Baby girl to know of her Great-Grandparents. Ed, Mary, John and Kate, - David, Elanie, Leonard and Rhea,; they are a part of her. In the same way the Twin Towers are a part of New York.

September 11th is part of America's story and identity.

American 11, United 175, and United 93's Gates in tribute.

This summer's travels brought me across the gateways of the hijacked flights on September 11th. In a understated but respectful memorial they are quietly marked with American flags. They're easy to miss, but It just takes a moment to pick them out.

It surprised me how I was struck in this simple act of walking the Terminal, especially at Logan International Airport. It was another way to connect to the people and events of September 11th. After all, it was passengers making their flight, at the time like any other flight. We've all shared in this experience.

While they may not look like much, I find these quiet tributes powerful. It reminds us of heroic acts of the passengers and crew. Especially considering how they we're the first to fight on September 11th.

I've not recently been through Dulles, but I'm sure it's marked the same way for Flight 77. I hope to see those American flags on those gates for many many years ahead.

Four World Trade Center to Top Out this Monday

Four WTC with top out Monday, June 25, 2012 with a ceremony to mark the occasion. The Observer has the details. The New York Times has a recent piece up this Sunday here. Interestingly enough the very same Structural Engineer that developed the first World Trade Center is behind this project again. Check out his work with the original WTC and Lesile Robertson's profile here.
